Understanding Value

We are almost done with our bicycle drawings and they are looking fabulous!  Let’s learn how we can ‘color in’ our drawings with pencil-this is called shading.  I am going to use several pencils that range from being hard to soft in order to shade and add value to my bicycle.

Practice a shading in your sketch book or on scrap paper.

Begin to shade your bicycle drawing.  Use shading to help your details to stand out.  Look at the bike and notice where are the dark areas and the light areas?  Your goal is to show three or more values (dark, medium and light) in your overall drawing.
